Games with Year 9s

Last Thursday Mr Auld brought in his year 9 maths class to teach us some classic games; pick up sticks, knucklebones, noughts and crosses and dominoes. It was great to see our class interacting with some senior students and playing games we hadn't played before or played for awhile.  The year 9 students made great teachers!

STEM Challenge - Egg Capsule

Our most recent STEM challenge (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) was to make a capsule that would protect an egg when it was dropped from a 3m height. We had some very innovative and impressive creations...some not so successful...but it was a fun challenge with 2 out of 6 eggs cracking on landing.

Morning Programme - What's in the bag?

The bag was large...and had something round inside of it...everyone thought it was Viktor's guinea pigs or rats...but how wrong were we!?

After working out that Viktor's morning programme of "what's in the bag?" was something to do with space, but it wasn't a planet, or a globe, or a star...we were stumped!!

Viktor left the room for awhile and we were all left wondering what was going to happen when he returned...A REAL LIFE ASTRONAUT!

Well done Viktor for a very interesting 'What's in the bag?'

Sports Activator - Rippa Rugby

It was a beautiful sunny day for our Sports Activator session with Shea on Tuesday. We were focusing on rippa rugby, in preparation for the annual South/West Otago rippa rugby tournament on the 29th May.

Shea got us warmed up with two games of Octopus. We had to be in when one of our tags got ripped off. This was working on our dodging and spinning techniques.

Once we were warmed up we moved onto some passing drills where we had to practice some short, pop passes. We all had two games of 1 vs 1, both as a defender and an attacker. This made us work on our speed and dodging skills.

Finally, we finished the session with a game of rippa rugby. We will continue to practice our skills in our PE lessons in class, ready to do our best in the upcoming tournament.

Make sure you watch the video of our 1 vs 1 games at the bottom, after the photos :)

International Firefighter Day

Last Friday was International Firefighter Day and we were lucky enough a visit from the local Lawrence Volunteer Fire Brigade and NZ First Member, Mark Patterson.

Mark introduced the Fire Brigade members, Jude, Matt, Colin and Jason. They talked to us about the importance of smoke alarms in our houses and to make sure we have an escape plan for getting out of our houses if there is a fire. We practiced how to wake people up if there is a fire at night, we yell "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!" and we get ourselves out and stay out.

We also had a water demonstration from Colin and Matt. It was interesting to see the different settings of water that they could use to put a fire out and how far the water could shoot.

Jude then explained all the different bits of equipment they are required to wear in a fire. They had to make sure that none of their skin was showing, otherwise they would get severely burnt.

It was great to have the fire brigade come and visit. We learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves safe in a fire.
