STEM Hero Helmets

This week for STEM the challenge was to plan, design and create a hero helmet in a group. The helmet had to be made out of newspaper and had to sit on the head of one group member for at least 30 seconds.

Here are some of the helmets in all different stages of the process

Guess who...??

Birthday Precepts

We're all Wonders!!

Over the past two weeks we have been completing art work do to with the shared novel we have read over the last two terms, Wonder. This art work required the class to each draw a profile and then around the outside of the art are things that students can do to be nicer to others and to show kindness.

They look really effective and hopefully the students have learned what it takes to be nicer to each other and to be more aware of the things they say.

One thing we have learned from reading Wonder is that we need to accept each other for who they are; what they look like, their hobbies, opinions, values and upbringings.

Also featuring some of our emu art...:)

Sports Acitvator - Touch

Yesterday we had a great touch session with Shea, with lots of games and drills to build our touch skills.

In our warm up game of seaweed we practised our running and dodging skills to get away from the taggers.

We then played a game like netball tag but with a rugby ball. This helped us work on our quick passing (for the people in) and also dodging for those people who were trying to not get tagged.

After this game we did a drill to practice our quick, short passes, while making sure we weren't passing forward.

Next we did a 2 on 1 drill that was designed to help the attackers draw in a defender and then offload the pass. When this worked it looked really good!

The last drill we did was practising our quick dumps and scooping with 3 people. This helps us get lots of quick metres and gets the defenders on the back foot...hopefully!

Finally, it was time for a game. This was a big game of 10 v 10 to put into practice all the skills we had learned throughout the session.

Inquiry - Fire Station Visit

On Thursday afternoon we visited the Fire Station as part of our community superheroes inquiry this term. It was an awesome visit and we are very thankful to Colin and Jude and the Fire Brigade for letting us come see all the cool equipment you use and hear about all the ways you help people in the community.

Everyone had a go in the driver's seat! Some budding young fire fighters!

Inquiry - Community Superheroes

This term we have been doing a lot of work around the heroes in our community. We have recently had some visitors come in to the class to talk to us about their careers and answer some questions that we have: Mark Patterson - politican, Mr Auld - principal and sports volunteer, Emma Wightman - nurse, Mrs Howell - St John Ambulance Officer and today we had Constable Craig Bennett come in and spend the afternoon with us! We are very appreciative of the time all these wonderful people have volunteered to come and talk to us. We have learned a lot and strongly believe they are all heroes!

Otago Primary Schools' netball tournament

Last Wednesday the Year 5 and 6 netball players went through to Dunedin to play in the Otago Primary Schools' netball tournament. This was an excellent way to finish off the netball season for both teams. Everyone played with great sportsmanship and gave it their all in every game.

Thank you Gemma for looking after the Year 5 team. They finished 3rd= and the Year 6 team ended up coming 9th out of 23 teams.
