STEM - 12 Straw Challenge

Last week for STEM we had the challenge of building the tallest free-standing tower using only 12 straws and 30cm of tape. Some groups used plastic straws while some used paper straws to see if this made a difference. Somehow, I don't think it was the straws that made the difference.

Well done to Zack, Olive and Katie's group who won the challenge by 2cms!

STEM - Unplugged Coding

Last week for STEM we had Room 4 join us to learn how to do some unplugged coding. This is coding without using a device. Room 4 were the experts so they taught us what to do. We had different roles to play in this session; the coder, the tester and the bot. It was great to see the problem solving skills coming out and the team work that went with this task too!

Speech Finals

Last Monday we had 7 people from Room 7. In year 5: Hannah Macdonald, Annabelle Patterson and Chloe Miller. In year 6: Archie Wightman, Grace Bradfield, Emily Harrex and Katie Harrex. Annabelle won the year 5 speech and Grace won the year 6 speech. She was also the overall junior speech champion.

Well done to all our speech makers, in class or in the finals. It is not an easy task talking in front of your peers or a big group so good on you all for giving it your best shot.

Our speech finalists!

STEM with Room 6

This afternoon, while some people were at cross country, we had a go at some new STEM challenges. In groups we got a different challenge and had to design something and then make a prototype of the design.

Seesaw

On Monday morning we all had a go at using an app called Seesaw, which is designed for children to share their learning with their parents and families. If you are a parent reading this then make sure you download the parent and family seesaw app and sign up with the code your child brought home yesterday so you can see their learning.

STEM

For the last two weeks of STEM we have had two structural challenges; one was called Spaghetti Structure and the other was called Marble Drop. These challenges both required lots of problem solving and team work.

South Otago Year 5/6 Netball Tournament

On Thursday Room Seven participated in the annual South Otago Year 5/6 Netball Tournament in Balclutha. This was the first year we had gone to this tournament and it was a great event.

It was awesome to see everyone having a go and enjoying themselves.
All three teams had some wins and losses and played with amazing sportsmanship the whole day!
Two of our teams reached the semi finals; one against St Mary’s,
who went on to win the competition, and one against Catlins.

A big thank you to Gemma and Margaret who managed teams and helped with transport.
We can’t go on these trips without our parent helpers so we really do appreciate it!

Last day of term

After the Wheelathon Constable Bennett ung out with us until lunch time while we did some writing and reading.

He had never tried fairy bread before which was perfect because we were going to be making some, eating it and then writing instructions on how to make it. Constable Bennett made sure that everyone was writing specific instructions so that even he would be able to make it.
