International Firefighter Day

Last Friday was International Firefighter Day and we were lucky enough a visit from the local Lawrence Volunteer Fire Brigade and NZ First Member, Mark Patterson.

Mark introduced the Fire Brigade members, Jude, Matt, Colin and Jason. They talked to us about the importance of smoke alarms in our houses and to make sure we have an escape plan for getting out of our houses if there is a fire. We practiced how to wake people up if there is a fire at night, we yell "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE!" and we get ourselves out and stay out.

We also had a water demonstration from Colin and Matt. It was interesting to see the different settings of water that they could use to put a fire out and how far the water could shoot.

Jude then explained all the different bits of equipment they are required to wear in a fire. They had to make sure that none of their skin was showing, otherwise they would get severely burnt.

It was great to have the fire brigade come and visit. We learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves safe in a fire.
