Last Tuesday Room 7 had our first Sports Activator session for the year with Gemma. It was great to have Gemma teaching us some athletics skills. We covered a lot of activities from high jump to sprints, to long jump and shot put. Room 7 focused on some techniques for each activity. For high jump we focused on our take off from the floor, at shot put it was about the strength and using our legs to get power in our shot, we practiced the correct style for running through some drills.
Check out our photos to see us in action.

The beginning of 2018!
Well another year has started and what a busy few weeks it has been. We have been very busy practicing for our athletics and swimming events. We know all the practices will pay off when we have our athletics day this Friday (23rd Feb) and our swimming sports day (15th March).

This week we welcomed Ari-Elle to Room 7. Ari-Elle and her family have moved to Lawrence from Auckland. We hope she enjoys her time at LAS.

Last week we did a science experiment that involved mixing cornflour, water and food colouring together to see what would happen. Each student wrote down their hypothesis, what they think was going to happen, and after the experiment we discussed who's hypothesis was correct.

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons this week we participated in a STEM activity in groups. STEM stands for; science, technology, engineering and maths. This week's challenge was to use a range of materials to make an aircraft that will fly the furtherest. The materials that were available to groups were: 6 straws, 6 pieces of A4 paper, 2 paper clips, 1 metre of cellotape, some blu-tack. All groups had to use the 6 straws but the other equipment was optional to use.
The winning group's plane flew over 4 metres. Check out the photo of the distances thrown for each group.

I think this toffee is stickilicious!!
Madness begins.
Swimming
On Friday we went to the pool for a swim because stinking hot and we were exhausted. Everyone jumped in and it was really refreshing. The pool all of a sudden turned into waves. All of the juniors and some of the seniors were there. Most of the classes went to the end of the pool to the deep end and did manu and staples into the pool. There was so much yelling involved. If you wanted to talk to someone you had to yell at the top on your lungs. We were in the cold pool for one hour.
How to make fluffy slime and regular slime.

- Glue (PVA)
- Food colouring
- Shaving cream (more shaving cream more fluffier)
- Borax (1 teaspoon at a time)
- Bowl
You get your bowl and glue out then pour as much glue you want into your bowl. Once you have done that put 1 teaspoon of food colouring in the bowl and mix it till your glue is the colour you want. Then add your shaving cream (the more shaving cream the fluffier it will be). Mix it well till the are all combined. Then get your borax and hot water and get 1 teaspoon of borax and mix till you can't see the borax. Once you have done that get 1 teaspoon of borax and put it in your bowl and mix till it is all sticking together. You can add more borax if it isn't sticking together.
How to make regular slime
What you will need:
- 1 teaspoon of borax
- white PVA glue
- 1 cup of warm water
- food colouring (optional)
- glitter (optional)
Add your borax to a cup of warm water and mix until dissolved. Put as much PVA glue into your bowl as you want (as much glue you have is how much slime you have). Add food colouring and mix. Add little bits of activator at a time (dissolved borax) and mix until it all sticks together. Tap your finger on your slime if comes off clean then take it out and knead it and play with it. It will get more stretchy the more you play with it.
